Position Summary

The candidate for Virtual Desktop Engineer will be the system owner DomiNET’s global VDI platforms. This entails owning the build, operations, and maintenance plan for DomiNET’s global Virtual Desktop solutions as well as serving as the customer interface for gathering feedback. To meet this, the Virtual Desktop Engineer will manage the creation of a tailored-for-VDI Windows 10 image that meets Security requirements, define the plan for automating all facets of application deployment, automate the creation and collection of Critical-to-Quality metrics around desktop performance, and serve as the advanced technical resource authoring comprehensive documentation and providing Tier 3 support. The candidate will be expected to be self-directing while delivering a continually improving user experience with finite resources. The candidate will be responsible for defining how the desktop team will use SCCM, Puppet, JIRA, embedding applications in the image, and Solarwinds 3rd Party Patch Manager across persistent and non-persistent VDI solutions around the globe, including sites with minimal to no reliable bandwidth. To accomplish these goals, we are seeking a driven and engaged candidate with experience in these tools, in using a DevOps approach to system development, , and a thorough understanding of Windows 10 management using the aforementioned tools as well as AD, GPO’s, and user permissions.

Specific Responsibilities

The Virtual Desktop Engineer will be responsible for all aspects of the end user’s experience on DomiNET’s virtual desktop platforms. This includes meeting with the users to gather constructive feedback and converting the feedback into actionable user stories or epics for improving the image or automation by the DevOps team. This also includes being the technical owner of the VDI images and backend infrastructure supporting the solution. Specific tasks include:

  • Build a Windows 10 VDI image that meets Security’s requirements, has built in metrics and reporting, and integrates with automated operations tools
  • Ensure the delivery of the Windows 10 image is within acceptable Critical-to-Quality metrics globally and taking ownership of issues that stop it from doing so
  • Work with customers, implementation partners, and internal IT staff to:
    • Discover ongoing issues and new opportunities to improve the VDI solutions
    • Informally answer technical questions to other DomiNET staff about our service and best practices
    • Propose changes to DomiNET’s architecture, infrastructure, and applications to make full use of the VDI environment
  • Work closely with the DevOps Team Lead to identify opportunities to script and automate repeated operations tasks and improvements continuously throughout the lifecycle of the solutions
  • Work with the Enterprise and Cloud Architects to define hardware requirements and options for accessing VDI solutions
  • Support Tier 3 calls when the Service Center and DevOps teams cannot solve an issue
  • Ensure the systems adhere to all relevant patching, operations, and security standards on a weekly basis
  • Review CloudFormation and Puppet scripts for Operating System configurations and patching including various flavors of Windows and Linux and COTS Applications such as Microsoft Office, WinZip, Firefox, and other standard packages
    • Deliver solutions in an Agile methodology with quick turn-around times, high availability, and low defect counts
    • Assist the DomiNET Security resources to learn how to automate implementation of FISMA and FedRAMP Moderate controls
  • Author technical documentation to capture the implemented system design, operations manuals, and hand-off manuals for the IT Service Center (help desk) and other Tier 1 or Tier 2 functionality
General Focus

The general focus of this position is to own and champion VDI solutions for DomiNET’s global workforce. This includes implementing the future of desktop and mobile services while also focusing on a low-touch operation model through the use of automation-first approaches and quality metrics to identify problems before the users do. This position will be expected to significantly advance the automation, provisioning, monitoring, and maintenance of DomiNET’s desktop experience in a short time frame

Skills/Knowledge Required:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related discipline and 3 years’ experience in the development of user desktop images; or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • 5 - 7 years of total relevant work experience in Information Technology, specifically in virtualization environments, ideally in virtualization of desktops
  • Advanced knowledge in Windows 10 Operating system controls (registry, profiles, services and components)
  • Demonstrated understanding of Active Directory design and controls (Group Policy, Login Scripts, and authentication).
  • Experience with application packaging, preferably in a virtualized environment
  • Strong experience with running SCCM 2012 configuration manager
  • Demonstrated ability to research new methods for enhancing performance, reliability, optimization tuning and overall user experience
  • Experience identifying desktop solutions and products including hardware standards for end users
  • Experience working in the Agile Software Development Life-Cycle
  • Time management skills, and the ability to prioritize and multi-task without daily direction
  • Self-motivated and able to work with a team to tackle issues as they arise and effectively influence others who are involved
  • Willing to take charge independently to offer opportunities to improve services related to the job they are performing
  • Familiarity with regulatory and legal requirements (i.e., FISMA, SOX, HIPAA requirements)
  • Strong technical certifications are a plus
